OBJECTIFIED: RESPONSE

For my first OBDF 110 assignment, I created a 3D sofa design. My inspiration came from the artist Hella Jongerious in the Documentary Film, Objectified. In this Film, Gary Hustwit shows how the artist perceives design as creating familiar objects that hold memories, like a sofa.

Hella Jongerious is well-known for using multiple layers in her artwork to create things that transcend aesthetics. Therefore, I decided to render one of her pieces shown in the film, a pinkish sofa which I changed to olive green with pillows of a peacock blue. By using Tinkercad, I design this 3D sofa. I played with the square shape to create rectangles, modified the ratio to 4 to create rounded edges, and used a cylinder to create bottoms.

This object captured my attention because it resonates with me. When I think of design, I think of something that looks pretty and makes me feel something. A sofa can hold multiple symbols. It can be a comfort zone after a long day. In Sofas, we laugh, cry, and enjoy a good movie with our partner; we kiss, dream, and exist. We can add so much symbolism to an object, and Hella Jongerious showed us how to help design iconic things that transcend time.
